Introduction to RealEye
Get to know what RealEye is and how to use its webcam-based eye-tracking to analyze visual behaviour and attention.
Welcome to RealEye!
This article serves as an introduction to the platform and its capabilities, providing you with a comprehensive overview of what RealEye is and how it can enhance your eye-tracking experience. Whether you are new to RealEye or looking to understand more about its features, this guide will help you get started.
What is RealEye?
RealEye is an online platform designed for conducting webcam-based eye-tracking studies.
It can be used across a variety of fields, including market research, user experience (UX) testing, psychology studies, and interactive media. By capturing data on where and how a person looks at specific stimuli, RealEye provides insights into attention, perception, and cognitive processing.
RealEye works using regular webcams / smartphone cameras - no specialized hardware, or software installations are required. Researchers and marketers can conduct studies on desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones in participants' natural conditions.
The platform collects the data in real-time and then processes it to RealEye’s intuitive Analysis Dashboard to generate heatmaps, gaze/fixation plots, and other visual representations of where and how users focus their attention.
RealEye offers a license-based pricing model that provides flexibility for different user needs. Its design focuses on simplicity, allowing researchers to start studies without requiring expensive equipment or complex setups. With support for multiple languages, RealEye ensures accessibility for researchers conducting studies across different regions and cultures.
The goal? To make eye-tracking more affordable, accessible and easy to use for researchers around the world!
How RealEye Works:
RealEye uses a standard webcam to track eye movements. The platform relies on computer vision and machine learning algorithms to process the video feed from the webcam and detect the movements of the eyes. This enables RealEye to track where a person is looking and analyze gaze patterns without the need for specialized infrared sensors or hardware.
But don't worry! The videos are not recorded or stored anywhere. The Fixation Estimation Pipeline runs directly on the participant’s device, ensuring all data processing occurs locally and reduces delays in obtaining gaze predictions. This localized approach benefits both performance and privacy, as it eliminates the need to transmit raw video data to external servers, keeping all sensitive information securely on the participant’s computer. Only the calculated gaze predictions are stored in a secure text format like "Timestamp: 10, GazePointX: 76, GazePointY: 24", with gaze positions estimated as percentage values of the displayed item.
Getting Started with RealEye
To begin using RealEye, follow these basic steps:
- Create an Account: [Sign up] for a RealEye account to gain access to the platform.
- Create a New Study: [Set up a study] by selecting the type of test you want to conduct and [uploading the stimuli] (e.g., images, videos, or websites).
- Collect the data: Send participants a link to join the study and collect their eye-tracking data through a webcam.
- Analyze the Results: Once data collection is complete, review heatmaps, gaze plots, and other visualizations to interpret user attention and engagement.
